More than 1.5 million Americans serving in the U.S. military will receive a tax-free $1,776 payment, according to a recent confirmation from the Internal Revenue Service.
The payment, known as the “Warrior Dividend,” was announced by former President Donald Trump as a symbolic tribute tied to the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary in 2026. The amount $1,776 reflects the year of America’s founding and is being issued as a one-time financial supplement for eligible service members.

Who Is Eligible for the $1,776 Payment

The Warrior Dividend will be distributed to active-duty and reserve members of the United States Armed Forces in pay grades O-6 and below. In total, the program covers approximately 1.28 million active-duty personnel, including officers up to the rank of colonel or Navy captain equivalent.
In addition, about 174,000 Reserve members also qualify, provided they were serving under active-duty orders of 31 days or more as of November 30, 2025.
Altogether, the initiative represents a $2.9 billion payout, officially classified as a one-time basic allowance for housing supplement.
Why the Payment Is Not Taxable
The IRS has confirmed that the Warrior Dividend is fully exempt from federal income tax. Under existing tax law, certain military-related payments fall into a protected category.
“Federal tax law specifically excludes from gross income a qualified military benefit,” the agency explained. “Basic allowance for housing payments meet this definition and are therefore not taxable.”
This means recipients will receive the full $1,776 amount, with no federal tax deductions applied.
Purpose Behind the Warrior Dividend
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth described the payment as both a gesture of gratitude and a historical tribute.
“This Warrior Dividend is a way to thank our service members and recognize 250 years of military service defending the nation,” Hegseth said. He added that the payment reflects broader efforts to improve quality of life for military families and strengthen long-term force readiness.
When Payments Are Being Sent
Distribution of the Warrior Dividend began in late December 2025, with eligible service members receiving the funds through standard military pay channels.
Bottom Line
The IRS-confirmed tax-free $1,776 Warrior Dividend delivers direct financial recognition to over 1.5 million U.S. service members, combining symbolic national history with practical economic support. For eligible military personnel, the payment arrives in full untouched by federal taxes and serves as both a housing supplement and a commemorative bonus ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.
